kinderkids – a kindergarten blog

A place to learn and share.

New KinderKid in Town!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages…the KinderKids would like to announce the arrival of a new member to our team.  A very special visitor has arrived in our classroom, his name is Stanley Lambchop.  Stanley has been flattened by a bulletin board in the middle of the night! Now he is only a half of an inch thick…can you believe it?  Stanley is so skinny – he can be mailed to visit his friends in California.  Can you imagine being 1/2 an inch thick?  Think of the things you could do and then think of the things you couldn’t do.   Take a few minutes to tell us what you would do if you were a 1/2 an inch think like Stanley.  Do you think Stanley will do that in our book?

Did You Say VideoConference?

Extra, extra…read, listen, watch, I guess I mean to say…Skype all about it!  Skype?  Did I say Skype?  What is that, anyways?  Well, Skype is a program that is used by millions of people to communicate with one another over the internet.  It can be used with computers, smart phones, and certain iPods to talk, type, or even videoconference with people thousands of miles away.  Tyler (my son) and I Skype with family and friends all of the time.  Many classrooms around the world have been teaming up with one another and “skyping” about their experiences in school.  Our classroom has recently teamed up with a first grade classroom in Kansas City, Kansas.  We will be traveling through cyberspace to visit 20 students in an urban classroom.  We are planning on working on a very special project together.  Our first videoconference will be very exciting, during that time each of us will be given time to introduce ourselves to the students in Kansas City.  What do you think you would like to share with them?  What do you think you would like to tell them about yourself?  Are you as excited as I am?

Our Trip!

We had a great time at the farm, can’t you tell?  Some of us have already asked if we can go back!  We would also like to send a special thank you to the family at Barr Ridge Farms for making our day so special and the PTO for funding our trip! What an experience we had on that special day! It was GREAT!  Thanks for the smiles!  Be sure to leave us a comment about your favorite part of the voicethread!!

Vat Happened to the Veggies?

Kinderkids ~ we have a problem!  There is a mystery in room C109!  I found these vegetables in our fridge this afternoon right before I left school!  What has happened to them?  I remember reading something with you about white veggies but our parents, friends, and relatives probably don’t have a clue what is happening to these poor veggie victims.  Do you think you can tell the bloggers what is going on in our class?  Be sure to tell them what we are reading, what is happening in the story and how you think the story is going to end.  (Yes I need you to make another prediction!)  I hope we can do something about this mystery before our pumpkins turn white!   Maybe, if you tell the readers about what is happening we will be able to save our pumpkins together!  Hurry – don’t delay!

Fall Frolic!

trip

In this collage you can see us on our trip to Barr Ridge Farms!  I can’t wait to get back to school to create our new voicethread.  My favorite part of the visit was everything!  I enjoyed being in the corn maze, on the hayride, on the farm tour, learning about pumpkins, and eating lunch.  I really enjoyed having a taste of fresh chocolate milk, didn’t you?  Maybe you can leave us a comment about your favorite activity at the farm.  When you are commenting please note the new options for making a comment.  You can chose to type your comment, record your voice, or even use your webcam to make a comment.  Don’t forget we are all going to get a chance to make a voicethread next week.  So think about what you want to tell the world about your trip to the farm.  There were so many things to do, I don’t think we’ll run out of things to say!  Thanks for your comments! ;)

Pumpkin Patch Predictions!

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown – PumpkinAwesome video clips here

We have made predictions about many things since school started.  We’ve predicted which apple would taste the best, what might happen next in stories we’ve read, and everyday we make predictions about the weather.  As you know, our trip to the pumpkin patch and corn maze is just around the corner.  I am asking you to make several predictions on this blog post.  1.  What do you think the weather will be when we take our trip?  You may want to click here to check the weather forecast for this week before you tell us your prediction.  2.  How many seeds will we find inside our own “great pumpkin”?  This may be a guess, but think about pumpkins you may have carved in the past.  3.  Do you think that roasted pumpkin seeds taste good?  Remember, in our class when we make a prediction…we always experiment to find out if we’re right, so your last prediction will be to tell our blog friends how you think we are going to find the answers to our questions.  Friends feel free to participate in our pumpkin patch predictions as well.  As always, thanks for commenting!

Cloudy With a Chance of…What?

@ Yahoo! Video

Can you believe the weather forecast?
I was planning on waiting until the winter weather hit to announce our unit on weather, but that weather had other plans for our classroom didn’t it?  Tomorrow I will share my personal favorite story, Judi Barrett’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” with you.  What a wonderful way to start a conversation about the weather, don’t you think? Be sure to tell us what you think about this weateher!  Oh and one more thing, I think my family may escape this crazy weather at the theater watching “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” in 3D!  Click here for the showtimes!!

Visitors From Afar!

We are so excited to announce that our blog has been visited by students and parents from New Zealand!  They were really happy to see our apple projects.  Our projects are shown as a link on their classroom blog!  You can check out what’s happening in Kaipara Flats Room 2 on their blog by clicking on their butterfly projects to the left.  Did you know that it is spring time in New Zealand?  The students in Room 2 were wondering if it is harvest time in Carrolltown.  I think that it would be great if you left them some comments about autumn in our hometown.  What are some of the signs that it’s harvest time here?  And if you’re visiting from New Zealand tell us about your Spring…We would love to hear about your “neck of the woods!”

Fire Safety Week 2009

The Carrolltown Volunteer Fire Department visited our school.  We learned so much from them.  Watch our video to hear what we’ve learned.  Let us know what you think!

Phonics Fun!

Do you remember when we played the catching game in phonics?  Tyler, DJ, and Kadence were wearing their letters and saying their sounds and we realized that blending those sounds made a word.  Frog finds the word we built very useful, doesn’t he?  Would you like to build words with the Word World animals?  Take a visit to the Word World website and tell us what you think about the games you play!
