Did You Say VideoConference?
Extra, extra…read, listen, watch, I guess I mean to say…Skype all about it! Skype? Did I say Skype? What is that, anyways? Well, Skype is a program that is used by millions of people to communicate with one another over the internet. It can be used with computers, smart phones, and certain iPods to talk, type, or even videoconference with people thousands of miles away. Tyler (my son) and I Skype with family and friends all of the time. Many classrooms around the world have been teaming up with one another and “skyping” about their experiences in school. Our classroom has recently teamed up with a first grade classroom in Kansas City, Kansas. We will be traveling through cyberspace to visit 20 students in an urban classroom. We are planning on working on a very special project together. Our first videoconference will be very exciting, during that time each of us will be given time to introduce ourselves to the students in Kansas City. What do you think you would like to share with them? What do you think you would like to tell them about yourself? Are you as excited as I am?

I want to tell the class from Kansas City that our class went on a field trip to a farm and went through a corn maze and hayride and got pumpkins and we saw cows. At school I like recess and literacy corners and I like lunch. I like computers and playing Geo Trax and watchng the Geo Trax movie.

Marissa and Nathan,
Wow! I’ve NEVER made puddy with my class only oobleck (we can share that with your class if you need directions). My class did get to go to a farm last year, but I didn’t get to go. Kindergarten always goes to the farm and first grade gets to go to the zoo. This year we went to Kalidescope. My class will tell you about that later. There were 3 different kindergarten classes last year so my class is made up of students from 3 different rooms. This year there are 3 first grade classes, too. How many kindergarten classes are at your school?
I am impressed about how much technology you are using. It will really prepare you for the future. What is Geo Trax?
Sincerely,
Your Video Buddies in Kansas City, Kansas

Miss Lorance,
Geo Trax are a remote control train set that my dad and I like to play. There are different train sets that go together to build a big train town. Some of the sets are Grand Central Station, a firehouse, a tunnel, and a barn. Some of the trains and drivers are Erik and Arrow, Bull and Bruno, Old Rust and Tex, and Brutus and Victor are the bad guys. There is also an airplane and helicopter.
Your Friend,
Nathan
